History

Alice and Kevin met in a volleyball class at the University of Virginia.  She was a first year, he was a second year.  They started going out November 27, 1992 by seeing a movie ("Under Siege" starring Steven Segal -- a great first date movie, despite what some may think).  Ever since, they have been inseparable (just ask their friends). In fact,  the Unabridged Dictionary (Special Edition) even went so far as to site "Kevin" as a synonym for "Alice".  Six years later, here they are...

When told about the engagement several of their friends commented, "It's about time!"

Engagement

Alice and Kevin had an amazing day on March 28, 1998.  That's the day they finally got engaged!!  With the amazing help of their friends James, Kerri, and Abbey, Kevin was able to catch Alice completely off guard during the peak of bloom for the cherry blossoms in downtown Washington, DC.  It was a beautiful day, and the sun shone particularly bright on that day.  She was in shock!!

After the round of teary-eyed joy and congratulations from friends, we headed out to a great celebration dinner at the famous restaurant Sequoia in Georgetown, Washington, DC.

The next day, they went and picked a great rock and ring.  You just have to see it!  How can you miss it?

Wedding Day

  Saturday, July 10, 1999
Mark your calendars!!

The wedding ceremony will be held at  Montpelier Mansion, in Laurel, Maryland (a beautiful, and picturesque, historical mansion).  We're going to have an outdoor/garden wedding.  July in the DC Area is the beginning of the hot and humid season, but we're hoping to sqeeze our wedding in before the really bad weather sets in.

Take a look around Montpelier, literally!

The temperature is very atypical in this part of the country.  It could be 75 degrees or it could be 95!!  To get the latest local weather report, click here for DC Area Weather.; you can also click here to see what DC looks like via a web cam.  Generally, I'd recommend lighter colors and looser clothing; no stiletto heels. We are planning on providing some sort of liquid refreshments and there should be plenty of shade to prevent people from passing out.  We promise you won't be outside for too long...

Wedding Plans

So how is our wedding planning going?

We have hired and have been working with a wedding coordinator to help us out with doing alot of the leg work that we don't have time to do.  Her name is Karen Powers and her company is called Classic Events.  Having her help out has proved to be a great asset, not only as additional hands to work with, but also for providing critical advice and counsel (using her experience to guide our inexperience).

She will even be there on the day of the wedding, so don't be surprised if you see someone running around making sure everything is as it should be -- that's just Karen helping to make our special day that much smoother.

We will still need help doing some of the details, passing out programs, manning the gift table, etc.  If you're interested in helping out, let us know!

We have gotten a place for the ceremony and reception, a great photographer, a great DJ, gotten a bridal gown, a Chinese dress ("chi pao"), an evening gown, and bridesmaids dresses, a florist, tuxes, wedding favors, ordered our invitations, picked an official, and even registered for gifts.  We're just cruising into the finish line at this point...

We're very excited about the talented husband and wife team of photographers  that we've signed with. Shelley and Larry Brodka of Photography by Design were discovered on one of our trips to a local bridal show. We had already found a photographer we liked, but when we saw Shelley and Larry's work we knew it was time to change our bias. They shoot in the photo-journalistic style, and that's exactly what we were looking for.

the Fun Ship "Inspiration"We've made arrangements for our honeymoon too.  We're taking two weeks for this. The first week we'll be on the Carnival cruiseship Inspiration sailing around the Southern Caribbean.  The second week we'll be at Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

We took our studio pictures with a great photographer in New York City chinatown last month.  You should be able to see at least some of the work on our special day.  We selected them after looking at four studios, based on quality of work, personal repoir, comfort level, and best value.  This is in addition to the local photographers we have hired to cover all the action on the big day...

Where To Stay?  What to do in DC?

There are numerous hotels to stay at in the area.  We got some negotiated rates at a few choice hotels in the area.  The one you pick will depend on what you plan on doing in DC and how long you're staying.  Many of you may want to print this out, so I've put it on a separate web page.

Want to know more about the Washington DC area and what it has to offer?  Check out my DC Area Page:  Kevin Chin's DC Area Page

Also...  Check the weather.  Take a look at DC...

The geography of the event is not helping very much.  The reception and ceremony are near Greenbelt, Maryland.  Both the groom's parents and the bride's parents are 45 minutes away in Northern Virginia.  If you are planning on staying for more than the wedding itself and are looking to visit with relatives, you'd probably be better off choosing a hotel that isn't so close to the wedding site.  Here's a table and map that may be able to help you decide.

Bridal Registry

For the convenience of everyone, we have registered at several locations (more may be added, so check back periodically).  In some cases, the store may not be a nationwide chain.  However, through the miracle of modern technology the store's sister operations can participate in the same registry.  Click below if you need help finding a store near you or to find the local alternative.

What store is closest to me?

For each of these stores, you can order over the phone or through the mail, and in the case of Macy's and Williams-Sonoma you can view the registry online and order items over the Internet (the same capabilities will be available soon for Crate and Barrel).  You can look at Crate and Barrel's current catalog online as well.  It should go without saying that you can also visit the stores directly.

In the Bridal Party?

That special day is almost here.  Are you nervous??  To get through it all, we'll need some help from some very special people...
  • So who are the bridesmaids and groomsmen anyway?
Tzu-Yueh Alice LeeThe blushing bride, Tzu-Yueh Alice Lee.  UVa "Comm School" graduate (COMM '96), now working for TRW as a recruiter.  Looking for an IT job?  She's also anxiously looking forward to Abbey's playmate.
Kevin Thomas ChinThe dashing  groom (Ok, I wrote this), Kevin Thomas Chin.  UVa "E-School" graduate (SEAS '95), former BDM/TRW employee, and now a hard-working Novell Systems Engineer.  Can you say computer geek?  He's got an eye on that brand new, "Nebio Blue", 1999 Passat GLS V6.
Tzu-I Amy LeeThe maid of honor, Tzu-I Amy Lee.  Alice's big sister ("jie-jie") and a CPA and "pointy-haired guy" (think Dilbert) at Price-Waterhouse-Coopers... in Bejing, China.  Well traveled.
Eric Joseph ChinThe bestman, Eric Joseph Chin, Kevin's younger brother.  Yet another UVa grad (CLAS '98), and now working on that M.D. so he can write friends and family all the viagra and claritin prescriptions they want (just kidding).  :-)
Margaret MeiOne of the bridesmaids, Margaret Mei, longtime friend of the happy couple.  As if you couldn't guess, another UVa grad (SEAS '96), and now working for 10Fold in gaye ol' San Francisco, CA.  I hear they're opening up an Oriental Regency in SF just for you, M&M!  ;-)
One of the groomsmen, Scot Appel, another longtime friend of K&A.  Did I mention he got his PhD in Chemical Engineering from UVa (SEAS '98)?  He can be found down in Charleston, SC these days working for Westvaco, and schooling those South-Carolinian-volleyball-wanna-be's.
Kristin Marie ChinOne of the bridesmaids, Kristin Marie Chin, Kevin's younger sister.  Not yet a UVa grad (but hoping to be  ;-) (CLAS '05), she's just completed her sophomore year at McLean High School and is looking forward to getting a very stylish driver's license...  and a car to use it with!
One of the groomsmen, Alan Tai, yet another longtime friend of A&K.  He got his Master's in Computer Science from (you guessed it) UVa (SEAS '96).  He's currently a hard-working developer for America Online;  yeah, for AOL stock!!  He's also a near-by neighbor of Kevin's, and owner of Meg the cat (ahh-choo!).
Linda LeeOne of the bridesmaids, Linda Lee, a longtime friend of the couple and an even longer-time friend of Alice (the infamous "Lee sisters").  Along with Alice and Sisi, another UVa Comm-School graduate (COMM '96).  Currently a CPA with a prominent New York accounting firm, and owner of the "Lee Motor Inn" (thanks, Linda)!
James SungOne of the groomsmen, James Sung, another longtime friend of the happy couple and also hoping to be a UVa PhD in Chemical Engineering graduate soon (SEAS '99?).  He's going to be working in Charlottesville as an analyst for a world super power... and working on perfecting his volleyball skills.
One of the bridesmaids, Sisi He, another longtime friend of A&K, and (as if I had to mention this anymore) a UVa Comm-School grad (COMM '96).  She's currently a CPA for Price-Waterhouse-Coopers, and proud owner of cute George.  Also newly engaged herself -- congrats!
One of the groomsmen, Scott Motter, another longtime friend of Alice & Kevin, and (altogether now...) a UVa graduate (SEAS '95) and former hall/apartment-mate of Kevin.  Ah, the memories...
The flowergirl, Ms. Jacky Chiao, cousin of the blushing bride.  Jacky's just completed the 4th grade and looking forward to putting on a good show.
The ring bearer, Mr. Alex Malblanc, also a cousin of the bride.

  • Groomsmen Tuxedos -- Wanna see what the tuxedo looks like?  Click for a larger view of the tuxedo...  I've chosen Small's Formalwear as the provider of the tuxes.  It's not really the exact model that's depicted (Chaps by Ralph Lauren, "The Newton"), but it's the same style (the difference is $$$, non-flapped pockets, and name).  Also, the actual vest is slightly different than the one depicted; the real vest is platinum colored, textured pattern, but without any black in it.  Grooms need to go to the Smalls in Fair Oaks Mall, Fairfax, VA soon (Mid-May at the absolute latest) to get fitted and make a full or down payment (min. of $20) -- tell them you're in my wedding party.  Alternatively, you could have a local tailor or someone you know make the necessary measurements to give you the best tuxedo fit.  Use this card as your guide...  Tuxedo Fitting Card (42 KB)  Any questions, contact me.
  • Bridesmaids -- Stay tuned...
  • Thank You! -- Thank you to all in the bridal party for your contributions to the wedding.  I know that it'll be a particularly special day thanks to all of you.  Also, a great big thanks to our readers, Valerie and Kerri.  It takes a brave soul to get in front of all those people!
